Required fields and validation

Toggle Required on any question and it is marked with an asterisk. Respondents cannot move to the next page, or submit, until it has an answer.

#Be sparing

A form where everything is required is a form people abandon. Mark the fields you cannot act without (usually a contact address and one or two specifics) and leave the rest optional.

#What is validated automatically

Email, phone, website and number fields check their own format. The message names the fix rather than just refusing: "That address is missing a domain".

#Errors on submit

If a required field is empty, the form scrolls to the first one and highlights it. On a multi-page form the check runs per page, so nobody reaches the end and discovers a problem three pages back.
